Description

Ghent University, a leading research institution with a dynamic environment, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Manurefinery Project within the Department of Biotechnology. The project is part of the EU Horizon initiative and aims to develop novel technologies for resource recovery from manure, focusing on mixed-culture fermentations to convert biomass into caproic acid. This position is ideal for a researcher with a background in bioproduction and bio-process design.

Location: Ghent University, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Center for Microbial Ecology and Technology (CMET), Ghent, Belgium
Contract Type: Limited duration, full-time
Start Date: January 2, 2025 (earliest)
Duration: 18 months (with potential extension for EEA nationals)
Occupancy Rate: 100%

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and optimize laboratory-scale systems for biomass conversion to caproic acid.
  • Collaborate with project partners and contractors to design and implement pilot systems.
  • Supervise the construction and installation of pilot systems on-site and provide training for operators.
  • Address scientific questions and perform experiments under controlled conditions.
  • Utilize bio-process design principles and operate bioreactors and laboratory systems.
  • Conduct data analysis and contribute to high-quality scientific publications.

Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in bioscience engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field, completed before the position start date.
  • Knowledge and experience in bio-process design and engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with bioreactors and laboratory systems, including analytics such as IC, HPLC, and GC.
  • Strong skills in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in English (C1 level).
